First grade is an exciting year for learning and growth!

    Philosophy

We use a balanced literacy approach to learning. Balanced literacy instruction addresses the needs of all learners, views teachers as informed decision-makers, is flexible and research-based.  A balanced literacy approach to instruction provides all students with daily opportunities to engage in various reading and writing activities to help them communicate more effectively.  In a balanced literacy framework, students participate in read alouds, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, and systematic word study.  In addition, they engage in modeled writing, shared writing, guided writing, and independent writing.
