• What is occupational therapy (OT)?

Occupational therapy is an allied and holistic health profession that helps individuals across the lifespan increase independence in every day activities or "occupations". OT is a client-centered and evidenced-based approach to supporting and helping people with various diagnoses, disabilities, injuries, or developmental delays achieve their full potential. Occupations include activities of daily living (self care skills), instrumental activities of daily living (complex skills to live independently), play, education, work, leisure, rest and sleep, and social participation.

School-based OTs help children improve their performance and independence in academic and school-based activities. The focus of treatment is addressing the underlying difficulties in fine motor, visual motor, visual perception, motor planning and coordination skills. OTs are creative problem solvers with expertise in task analysis, modification, and adaptation.
